Vilamoura is the name given to an area rather than to any actual town. It is outstanding in that it is one of the largest single tourist complex in Europe and covers some 2,000 hectares (around 5,000 acres) of land. The land is variable in its vegetation, some parts covered in pine forests whilst others open recovered marshland. Vilamoura is a special place, a unique leisure and recreation resort community where the pace of life is so easy it feels like summer all year round.
There are two main beaches at Vilamoura, the beautiful Falesia that stretches for miles, always offering plenty of space and seclusion ,even in the height of the season, and the Marina Beach that is right in the centre of Vilamoura and is serviced by the 5 star Tivoli Marina hotel.
The main beach at Vilamoura (to the west of the marina), called the Falesia, is beautiful, very clean and has been awarded the blue flag. It is fantastic for families and watersport enthusiastics alike. The beach is very sandy (not fine shingle that you find in many European resorts) and stretches for around 10km! This means that even in the height of summer you can always find a nice quiet place on the beach.
The sea here is lovely and clear and the beach very genlty slopes into the water, which again makes it great for families.
On the beach you can find sunbeds and parasols for hire, together with various watersport activities, inculding jet-ski rental. There are also several shops, bars and restaurants on the beach to cater for your needs during the day.
Just behind the beach is a large nature reserve where building is not permitted. This preserves the beauty of the beach as there are no buildings along the front.
The Marina Beach is situated to the east side of the marina and is directly in front of the 5 star Tivoli Marina hotel. Although much smaller, this beach has similar fine sand as the Falesia beach, but has the advantage of the 5 star facilities from the Marina hotel, including a waiter bar service, and very luxurios daybeds for hire. However, due to being in the heart of the resort, the sea front here is more built-up and does not feel as wild and natural as the Falesia beach.
At the heart of Vilamoura is the marina which has the capacity to berth over 1,000 boats, making it one of the largest marinas in Europe. The marina is surrounded by numerous shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. There are also some luxury hotels as well as a large casino. Many watersports, boating and fishing activities also operate from the marina.
Vilamoura is of course also famous for its 6 world class golf courses. For more information on each of these, please click on the links below (the information will open in a new window):
